Del Rancho de Tahlequah

Del Rancho

My family and I took a road trip to Tahlequah this past weekend to do some genealogical research at the Cherokee Heritage Center, and afterwards had to decide on which wonderful Tahlequah dive to go to. I had lived there when I went to college and really had my heart set on Grand China, but alas it was closed. So my husband chose a Tahlequah local favorite: Del Rancho.

Contrary to what the name might suggest, Del Rancho is not a Mexican restaurant but rather a burger joint that truly harkens back to the 50′s.  From the adorable little cowboy on the outdoor sign to the retro wall decor to the menu with a variety of treats including what my daughter and I got, Dr. Pepper whips, this place is vintage all the way!

When you walk in, you seat yourself at a table decked with menus and a telephone, and once you decide what you want, you simply pick up the phone and call it in to the kitchen.

I went for the bacon burger (because I’m a sucker for anything with bacon) sans mayo and was pleased with a generous portion of bacon.  The patty was relatively large in circumference but thin and that’s how I like my burgers so I was happy.

My husband and daughter were happy with the cool atmosphere of the place as well as the food; my husband got his favorite Del Rancho plate - a chicken fried steak burger with cheese tots, and my daughter got a chicken tender plate that came complete with fries and fry bread (now that’s Cherokee country for ya).  (And you’ll have to forgive the photo quality – I just had my iPhone camera on me that day).

I’m typically not a burger person, but I was in that rare mood that day and I’m glad I opted for it - theirs was one of the better ones I’ve had.  I stole a bit of the fry bread from my daughter’s plate, too, and it was simply heavenly!  They’ve got a great variety of all-American foods and tasty drinks including the aforementioned ‘whips’ where you can get your favorite soda blended with smooth soft serve ice cream.  So from the fun atmosphere to the tasty food, Del Rancho was a great way to top off our Tahlequah trip!
