El Guapo’s Cantina – Muy Delicioso!
Saturday in Tulsa this past weekend was gorgeous – the epitome of spring time weather with temps in the upper 70′s, mild and sunny skies – the perfect weather for outdoor rooftop dining! Eric and I had never been to El Guapo’s so this was a fun experience. We headed there in the early afternoon and the rooftop was packed! Lots of people sipping margaritas, hanging with their pooches, listening to a mix of classic Michael Jackson to Cyndi Lauper, all the while munching on salty chips and spicy salsa.
We decided to start off our meal with an order of Guacamole de la Casa – ($5.99) Guacamole consisting of ripe avocados, fresh cilantro, onions, and lime, served with crispy corn tortilla chips. It was a big bowl and we had plenty left over from just the two of us.
When I lived in Los Angeles, my boss would take me to the Grand Central Market once a month for an authentic Las Tortas. I had to try El Guapo’s version to see how it compared. Although it was not nearly as delicious as the ones I remember in Downtown L.A. it was a pretty good knockoff. I ordered my Las Tortas with carnitas (pulled and smoked pork) but there are other meat options as well. The Las Tortas – ($7.99) is served on a Mexican Bolillo bun with avocado, lettuce, tomato, red onion, quesillo cheese, chipotle mayo and your choice of meat. It was huge and could easily feed two! It is served with jalepeno coleslaw or fries – I chose the coleslaw and was so glad I did. The coleslaw was both spicy and creamy and a perfect companion to the Las Tortas.
Eric decided to try the Oaxacan Tamale (one per order) @ $6.49.
We watched Top Chef Masters last year and the winner, Rick Bayless, won with a Oaxacan Mole sauce. The menu at El Guapo’s describes the dish as a hand made tamale featuring smoked mole chicken cooked in a banana leaf pouch with onions, cilantro, and Mexican crema. Eric loved the tamale and so did I! The Mexica crema was delicious and the mole very complex in flavor.
Since the meal was so tasty and we were having such a nice time we couldn’t resist dessert. Our waitress urged us to try the Peaches and Cream Sopapilla Relleno – ($4.99) and we’re so glad we did. The dessert features a warm, crispy sopapilla filled with honey and caramelized peaches. It is served with vanilla ice cream, topped with whipped cream and fresh strawberries. Pure decadence and worth the ungodly amount of calories in every bite!
We had so much fun at El Guapo’s we can’t wait to go back. Next time we’re planning on taking some friends with us to enjoy the rooftop atmosphere and share the large quantities of food El Guapo’s serves. We enjoyed visiting this unique downtown Cantina!
